We also assessed the nursing homes in the nearby city of Elkhart. We found the nursing home in Portage to be a better bet than most of the nursing homes in Elkhart. This facility's impressive profile was highlighted by its short-term care grade, which is addressed in the next section.

In computing our short-term care scores, we analyze a facility's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly trained professionals. This area is often a useful assessment of a facility's rehabilitation services. This city also really excelled in the category of nursing, where it received an A-. Finally, this place earned a B- for its inspections score and a grade of D for long-term care. Clearly, long-term care proved to be its weak link, but a single poor category grade isn't the end of the world.
