In calculating our short-term care ratings, we assess the facility's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists speech therapists and other types of therapists. This category is typically a fair measure of the nursing home's rehabilitation. This place excelled in the two key staffing areas we assessed. In fact, it offered about 50% more care from registered nurses and physical therapists than the average nursing home. This is definitely a great sign. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in New Jersey in this area with 69.1 percent of its residents returning home.
Facility Inspections
This facility also received an A+ inspection score, making it one of the rare facilities to receive multiple A+'s in our categories. This is based on the facility's recent inspection reports. An A+ in this category is one of the biggest complements we can pay to a facility. Inspection grades are tied to several pieces of information found on the a nursing home's recent government inspections. Places that receive favorable grades in this category have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. While this facility had some deficiencies on its report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe made us feel better about this inspection report.
Nurse Quality
We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility received an impressive grade of A in our nursing category. We looked at the skill-level of nurses at the nursing home, in addition to the quantity of time those nurses worked with residents, in calculating our score in this area. This place boasts a really impressive 5.1 hours of nursing care per resident each day, of which a significant percentage was provided by registered nurses. This is one of the most highly trained levels of nurses. On top of offering high levels of nursing care, this place also excelled in the quality-based metrics we assessed. For example, it performed as well as any nursing home in the country when it comes to minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. We view these datapoints as good measures of the caliber of nursing care provided.
Long-term Care Quality
The last area we looked at was long-term care. In this category, we awarded this facility a solid grade of B-. This ended up being this nursing home's least impressive area. Long-term care scores are based in part on a nursing home's volume of care. This means a broad spectrum of personal care services, ranging from assistance with activities of daily living to routine healthcare services. After assessing the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we turned to the facility's vaccination statistics. We were not able to find this facility's vaccination rates. Finally, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. It had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
