Facility Inspections
The main reason this turned out to be a decent nursing home is that it received an excellent inspection grade. In fact, its inspection score was far better than its overall score. In our inspections category, we gave it an A+. Inspection grades are tied to several items located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that receive favorable grades in this area have few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these facilities should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with endangerment of patients. While this place had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Another strength of this nursing home is its impressive score in long-term care. We gave it one of our better grades in that category, with a grade of A-. Nursing homes that receive this type of score in long-term care tend to provide consistent 24/7 care to make sure residents are well cared for. In addition to looking at the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 98.3871 percent of its residents, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia sadly is often a life or death health condition for nursing home residents so we prefer when a facility doesn't leave this to chance. Finally, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.68 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home has less hospitalizations than the majority of nursing homes.
Short-term Care Quality
The next area we looked at was short-term care, where this facility was awarded a grade of C in this area. Our short-term care ratings are meaningful for patients seeking rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally utilizes more skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means a broad spectrum of services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. One of this nursing home's strength is that it offers more hours of physical therapy per week to its residents. The final metric we assessed in this area is the number of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 0 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is actually below average.
Nurse Quality
The final category we looked at is nursing. Sadly, it received an F for this category, which is a bottom of the barrel score. This is certainly a significant disappointment. When calculating our nursing scores, we analyze both staffing levels and the training levels of the nurses. This nursing home averaged only 3.1 hours of nursing care per resident each day. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. To go along with its subpar totals in the area of nursing hours per resident, this place also did not perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing scores. We looked at the percentage of patients experiencing pressure ulcers and major falls. This place had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average nursing home. This could be a bad sign when you consider that many falls and bed sores are preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, these scores pulled down this nursing home's nursing grade significantly.
