Facility Inspections
On top of being a first rate nursing home overall, this nursing home performed well in the area of inspections, where it earned an A+. Very few places fared this well in this category. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating our inspection scores. One key factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is arguably more important than the number of deficiencies, as some deficiencies end up being relatively insignificant. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its report, none of them were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we graded this nursing home so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing score. This proved to be its second best category grade. In that category, we gave this facility a grade of A. Our nursing score analyzes the facility's nurse staffing levels. We factor in both the levels of licensure of the nurses and the quantity of hours spent with patients. This nursing home provides 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at some nursing quality measures in determining our nursing grades. This place performed very well when it comes to avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers. We consider these areas to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also received a fine long-term care score. This actually turned out to be this nursing home's third most impressive category score. In that area, this facility received a score of A. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in this category it generally means it's well-staffed and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. One of the factors we considered in addition to nursing hours was vaccines. This facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccination is a great way to minimize unnecessary deaths and hospitalizations for the nursing home population. This facility was also able to keep its residents out of the hospital. It had only 1.46 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.
Short-term Care Quality
Moving on to our next category, this nursing home was given a highly favorable short-term care score. We gave it a grade of A- in this category, giving this facility straight A's. Our short-term care grade is typically used to grade a facility's performance with rehabilitation. To offer highly scored rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must feature higher levels of highly skilled nursing. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists and other licensed professionals. This facility excelled in the two key staffing areas we looked at. The facility supplied more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than a typical facility. This is an excellent sign. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that it outperformed the majority of nursing homes with 52.3 percent of its residents able to return home. This is a better rate than most facilities.
