Long-term Care Quality
Although this place's overall score was not a highlight, it actually performed well in long-term care. In fact, we awarded it an impressive grade of A for that category, which is one of our better grades. This kept this facility from receiving an even worse overall score. When facilities receive this type of score in long-term care it is usually a good sign for resident care and indicates that the facility is well-staffed with nurses and aids. In addition to looking at the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia can be a life threatening health condition for nursing home patients so we prefer when a facility doesn't roll the dice on this issue. The last datapoint we assessed is its hospitalization rate. Here we found that this facility had 4.09 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. While this admittedly wasn't as strong as most of its other scores in this category, this statistic may be skewed for some nursing homes based on the preexisting medical conditions of residents.
We also wanted to point out this nursing home's decent health inspections in recent years. We gave it somewhat respectable grade of C in this category. Inspection grades are based on datapoints found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are a key thing to look for on these reports. Severe deficiencies indicate a threat to patient safety. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. Unfortunately, we also need to draw your attention to the fact that this facility received some government fines in recent years.

We gave this facility a grade of just D for our nursing rating. Our nursing score analyzes several components, most of which are tied to nursing hours. This facility provided 3.8 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is below the national average. This place also had abysmal scores in some of the quality-based metrics to pair with its low nursing hour totals. We looked at the percent of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and we were very disappointed. This nursing home was at approximately 1.5 times the national average in this measure. This is likely a bad sign in light of the fact that so many bed sores could be avoided with better nursing care. This metric helped pull down this facility's nursing score significantly.
Short-term Care Quality
The final category we assessed is short-term care, where this facility received an abysmal score here also. Sadly, it received an abysmal F in this area, which is definitely somewhat alarming. In determining our short-term care scores, we size up the facility's levels of highly skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. This category is typically a meaningful measure of the nursing home's ability to rehabilitate patients. Not surprisingly, we discovered that this nursing home offers far less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than a typical facility. The last measure we considered in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that just 38.1 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these poor metrics doomed this facility's short-term care grade.
