To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for our long-term care grade. When facilities receive this kind of grade in this category it is typically a good sign for patient care and suggests that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses and aids. Once we looked at the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination record. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents against pneumonia. Vaccines are vital to keeping patients healthy. Finally, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.05 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

This facility also performed well in the area of inspections. It received a nearly flawless government inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our best scores in that category with an A. Few facilities with an overall grade in this range performed this well in multiple categories. Arguably the most critical factor we look at in determining our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies can be found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher grades in this area most likely avoided the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. This is very impressive. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

This nursing home's next best category was nursing. We awarded it a grade of C in this category. While this wasn't quite as good as some of its other category grades, this isn't a bad score either. When computing our nursing grades, we weigh both nursing hours and the levels of licensure of the nurses. This facility provided just 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a relatively low total compared to most other facilities. Lastly, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics. While this facility got docked a bit for nursing hours, it excelled in a few of these quality metrics. With less than five percent of its patients sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed very well in this metric. This is typically an indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as by having a policy of moving a patient even once per day.

This facility's least impressive category is short-term care, which is the last category we scored. It received a lowly F in this category. Even with a few strong scores in other categories, this score is nevertheless somewhat disappointing so we would like to to point it out. In the area of short-term care, we attempt to qualify measures of a facility's rehabilitation services. We analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses and physical and occupational therapists. Unfortunately, this nursing home was below average in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its residents based on the measures we assessed. The final statistic we considered in this area is the percentage of residents that ultimately returned home from the facility. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this area as well, with just 3.6 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, this was well below the national average.
