Facility Inspections

Grade: A

One of the reasons this ended up being a strong facility is that it received an impressive inspection rating. In fact, inspections turned out to be its best category grade. In this category, we awarded this facility an A. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in determining these inspection scores. One of those factors is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some of these can be relatively insignificant. This nursing home received 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none were considered severe. This indicates that the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies to create an imminent threat to resident safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

This facility was awarded an impressive short-term care score as well. We gave it one of our higher scores in that area with a score of B+. In the area of short-term care, we endeavor to qualify measures of a facility's rehabilitation. We analyze a nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not every facility employs these skilled professionals. However, according to the information they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The final measure we looked at in this area is the number of patients who were able to return home from the nursing home. We found that 5.3 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home as opposed to remaining at the facility on a permanent basis.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

This facility is also above average in the category of long-term care, where it was given a grade of B+. It outperformed most facilities in this category. Long-term care scores in this range generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. After looking at the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination data. This facility vaccinated 98.657715 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is far higher than the average nursing home. Finally, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B

The final area we scored was nursing. We awarded this nursing home one of our more favorable grades in this area, with a B. This nursing home turned out to be strong in all areas we analyzed. Our nursing rating is mostly based on a facility's nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this facility excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home Indiana in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can often be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as by employing a system of turning a patient even once per day.
