One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an A+ in our inspections category. This is just about as good as it gets in this very important area. Perhaps the most significant factor we consider in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's inspection reports. Facilities with better scores in this category typically dodged the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

To complement its strong performance in other areas, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for our inspections rating. Our nursing grade is largely associated with the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 3.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality measures and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any nursing home California in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as having a system of moving residents at least once a day.

This facility also was given a strong long-term care grade. Indeed, this turned out to be its third strongest category grade. In that area, this facility received a grade of A. Nursing homes that receive this kind of grade in long-term care tend to provide consistent around the clock care to make sure residents are kept in good health. One of the criteria we considered on top of nursing hours was vaccines. This nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its residents. This is a proven method to minimize unnecessary deaths for the aged 65 and up population. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.45 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.

In the last area, we awarded this facility an A+ for its short-term care grade. This rounded out a very strong profile. In crafting our short-term care grades, we quantify the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our objective is to formulate a measure for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. Fortunately, it looks like this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not every facility employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, according to the information this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Finally, we considered the number of patients who ultimately were able to return home from this facility. We found that 0 percent of this nursing home's patients were able to return home.
