Facility Inspections
To go along with its decent overall grade, we gave this nursing home an A for our inspections rating. This is far more impressive than its overall grade. Arguably the most important factor we look at in computing our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher scores in this category most likely dodged the more severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. This place was assessed 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This indicates that the government inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies to pose an imminent risk to patient health or safety. A couple of minor deficiencies should not lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.
Short-term Care Quality
In addition, we gave this facility a B in our short-term care category. This is one of our more favorable scores. With our short-term care score, we endeavor to create a valuable gauge for rehabilitation. In this process, we assess the nursing home's offerings of skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. This proved to be a real strength for this facility. This place outperformed the vast majority of facilities in the nation in this area with 57.6 percent of its patients returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
Another strength of this facility is its favorable grade in nursing. We awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of D. The nursing grade is based on a handful of subcategories, most of which are tied to quantities of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is slightly below average. In addition to its below average nursing hour totals, this place received poor marks in several of the quality-based measures we considered in calculating our nursing scores. We found that more of this nursing home's patients suffered falls which led to major injury. We would argue that many falls could be prevented with better nursing care. This statistic contributed to this nursing home receiving a terrible nursing grade.
Long-term Care Quality
The last category we assessed is long-term care, turned out to be this nursing home's worst category. We gave this nursing home a D in that category. In a long-term care setting, the primary goal is to maintain residents' quality of life and keep them safe. On top of assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents. To our surprise, this place was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.85 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Sadly, a few of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.
