Facility Inspections
One of the reasons this place ended up being a quality nursing home is that it received an A+ in our inspections category. This is as good as it gets in this critical category. Arguably the most important factor we consider in computing our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Nursing homes with better scores in this category most likely avoided the most severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. Although this place had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also was given an A+ for its long-term care score. Facilities that excel in long-term care tend to provide residents with closer supervision and stay on top of routine medical care. In addition to considering the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is much higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality
We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility excelled in our nursing rating. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. We weighed the skill-level of nurses at the facility, in addition to the quantity of hours the nurses spent with patients, in computing our grade in this area. This particular nursing home provided 0.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any place the country in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as by having a protocol of turning residents at least once a day.
Short-term Care Quality
The final area we analyzed was short-term care, where this nursing home was awarded an A-. This topped off an elite profile. Few facilities received an A- or higher in in each area we assessed. In computing our short-term care ratings, we look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The purpose is to create a measure for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. Fortunately, it appear that this nursing home employs registered nurses. Not all nursing homes employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, according to the information they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The last statistic we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We discovered that 4.9 percent of this facility's patients returned home.
