Nurse Quality
Unfortunately, we did not have many positive things to say about this facility's overall grade or its category grades. Its best category is nursing. Nevertheless, with just a D in this category, it still performed badly. Our nursing grade analyzes the nursing home's nurse staffing levels. We consider both the levels of skill of the nurses as well as the quantity of hours spent with patients. Quantity of nursing care does not appear to be the source of this facility's poor nursing grade. This place provides 4.2 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This is actually better than we expected. In computing our ratings, we apply additional weight to hours performed by highly trained nurses such as registered or licensed nurses. Despite performing well in terms of nursing hours, this facility did not perform as well in the quality-based metrics we looked at in determining our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of residents sustaining major falls and pressure ulcers. This facility was above the national average in both metrics.
Long-term Care Quality
Sadly, this facility's next most respectable score was long-term care. However, with a grade of D in this category, it still performed somewhat poorly. Long-term care grades in this range generally are a bad sign for the quantity and quality of care provided by nurses and aids. This facility's vaccination data lagged a bit behind a few of its other datapoints in this category, such as its nursing hours. This facility gave the pneumonia vaccine to just 89.88327 percent of its residents. We'd like to see some improvement in this area in the future. Lastly, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this facility fared poorly with 3.23 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Sadly, this figure is nearly twice the national average.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home ended up receiving a rock-bottom grade in our short-term care area. It was given an F in this area. Short-term care ratings are crucial for people needing rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally utilizes higher levels of highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes a wide spectrum of services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. With a grade of this caliber in this area, we were not stunned to learn this facility was well below average in multiple staffing metrics we looked at. The nursing home offered far fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than most other facilities. The final item we assessed in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 33.9 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these subpar statistics doomed this nursing home's short-term care grade.
Facility Inspections
Turning to our final category of inspections, this facility received a grade that's as bad as it gets. We weight this category more heavily than our other categories. For places that received this poor of an inspection score, we would scrutinize the severe deficiencies on its inspection report. This facility was hit with a category G through L deficiency, which are among the more severe categories of deficiencies. These categories indicate that the deficiencies uncovered by CMS had potential to create actual harm to patients. Lastly, we need to draw your attention to the fact that this nursing home was assessed large government fines exceeding $50,000. This generally means that CMS inspectors grew tired after multiple years of failed government inspections.
