Short-term Care Quality
Although we graded this nursing home incredibly poorly overall, it received a decent short-term care score this year. We gave it a B- in that area, which was the closest thing to a bright spot we can find for this facility. In computing our short-term care scores, we assess the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The purpose is to devise a tool for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. One of this nursing home's strength is that it offers more hours of physical therapy per week to its patients. The last datapoint we considered in this category is the number of patients that eventually returned home from the facility. We found that it performed better than most nursing homes in this metric with 50.8 percent of its residents returning home. With most facilities, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we graded this facility so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing score. This turned out to be its second best category grade. In that area, we awarded this facility an C. Nursing ratings are based in large part on nurse staffing levels. According to CMS records, this facility averaged 3.9 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Keep in mind that when we calculate our nursing grades, we apply more weight to hours performed by nurses with a higher level of skill. Finally, our nursing scores also weigh quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This place performed above average in this area.
Long-term Care Quality
Surprisingly, we gave this nursing home a grade of C for its long-term care score, which really isn't too bad of a score. Long-term care grades are based on the nursing home's amount of care. This means a vast scope of personal care services, ranging from assistance with activities of daily living to routine medical services. On top of looking at the quantity of care provided by aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Thankfully, this nursing home gave the vaccine to 99.591 percent of its patients, which is a very respectable figure. The last datapoint we looked at is its hospitalization rate. While it had 2.3 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric was not too far off the national average.
Facility Inspections
The last category we looked at was inspections. Unfortunately, this ended up being this nursing home's worst grade. We gave it a D in this area. Since this information is collected by independent government inspectors, we weight it heavily in our grading. Inspection grades factor in many items on the nursing home's inspection reports. When you find severe deficiencies on the inspection reports, this is typically the worst sign. Severe deficiencies indicate a threat to resident safety. This particular facility was hit with 6 deficiencies by government inspectors. The only positive thing we can say is that none of its deficiencies were in the categories that suggest they created a threat to resident safety or health. Finally, CMS cited this nursing home for possible abuse or neglect. Hopefully, its performance improves in the future, but until then we simply can't recommend this facility.
