Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-plus

We also found that this facility excelled in our long-term care rating. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. When nursing homes receive this type of score in this category it is usually a good sign for resident care and suggests that the place is well-staffed with nurses and aids. After assessing the significant amount of nursing hours and other staffing provided by this nursing home, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination statistics. This facility vaccinated 97.34513 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is much higher than the average nursing home. The last statistic we assessed is its hospitalization rate. We found that this nursing home had 2.11 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-plus

This facility also received an A+ for its short-term care grade. Our short-term care scores are thought to be more critical for individuals needing rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation usually mandates additional skilled nursing services. This includes not just nursing services, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. This facility excelled in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It supplied more care from registered nurses and physical therapists than the average nursing home. This is typically an encouraging sign. The final measure we assessed in this category is the number of residents that ultimately were able to return home from the nursing home. We found that it performed as well as just about any facility in Delaware in this area with 84.7 percent of its patients returning home. For most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A

Adding to its impressive resume, this nursing home also excelled in our nursing category. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A for that category. When calculating our nursing grades, we factor in both nursing hours and the skill levels of the nurses. This place boasts a really impressive 4.2 hours of nursing care per patient daily, of which a significant portion was provided by registered nurses. This is one of the most highly highly trained levels of nurses. In addition to offering impressive levels of nursing care, this facility also performed well in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at. By way of illustration, in terms of the number of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, this place outpaced the national average. This is often a good indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls. Pressure ulcers can frequently be prevented with better nursing care and having a policy of regularly turning residents to avoid bed sores.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

Lastly, this nursing home has received near flawless government inspections in recent years. We awarded them an A- in this category. This is one of the few nursing homes in the country to receive an A- or better in every single category. Our inspection grades are tied to items found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities that receive favorable grades in this area tend to have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes should not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. This facility was assessed 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This indicates that CMS didn't consider any of these deficiencies to pose an immediate risk to resident health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
