Long-term Care Quality
In addition to receiving a great overall grade, this facility also received an A+ long-term care grade. When nursing homes receive this kind of grade in this category it is a good sign for resident care and indicates that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses aids. In addition to considering the elite quantity of care provided by aids and other staff at this nursing home, we also were pleased by the nursing home's vaccination data. For example, this nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is very impressive. Finally, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. We found that this nursing home had 2.34 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days.
Short-term Care Quality
Another reason we rated this facility so highly is that it was given an A+ short-term care grade. This is just about as strong as it gets in this area. In the area of short-term care, we try to assess indicators of a facility's rehabilitation. We assess a nursing home's skilled nursing services, including the ones performed by registered nurses and physical therapists. Remarkably, this facility provides about one and a half times as many hours of services from physical therapists and registered nurses than most facilities we looked at. This is certainly a great sign. The final datapoint we assessed in this area is the number of patients that returned home from the facility. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in Florida in this area with 71.5 percent of its patients returning home.
Facility Inspections
The next category we looked at was inspections, where this facility also received an A+ grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Perhaps the most important factor we look at in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Facilities with better grades in this category most likely dodged the most severe deficiencies involving patient abuse or death. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its report, none were serious based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Nurse Quality
Turning to our final area, this nursing home was awarded a strong nursing score. In fact, we gave it a grade of A in this area, rounding out a straight A profile. Our nursing score analyzes the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. We look at both the levels of skill of the nurses as well as the quantity of hours spent with patients. This place provided 5.1 hours of nursing care per resident each day, which is among the higher totals in the country. A significant portion of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most skilled levels of nurses. We were really impressed by these statistics. On top of offering high levels of nursing care, this place also fared well in several of the quality measures we assessed. For example, in terms of the percentage of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, this facility performed better than the national average. This is generally a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls. Pressure ulcers can generallY be prevented with better nursing care and having a policy of regularly moving patients to avoid bed sores.
