Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

One of the reasons this ended up being a great nursing home is it received an A+ inspection grade. This is as good as it gets in this very important category. Our inspection scores account for a host of factors included in a facility's inspection report. One key criteria we look at is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with better scores in this category tend to have few severe deficiencies. While this facility had a few minor dings on its report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G through L. This means CMS didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Nurse Quality

Grade: A

One of the other reasons we rated this facility so highly is that it received a very impressive nursing score. This turned out to be its second best category grade. In that area, we gave this nursing home a grade of A. The nursing score is based on a handful of factors, most of which are tied to nursing hours. This facility provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility the state in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as by having a system of moving residents at least once a day.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: A-minus

This facility also was strong in the area of long-term care, where we gave it a grade of A-. Not many facilities fared better in this area. Long-term care grades of this caliber generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. One of the statistics we considered on top of nursing hours is vaccinations. This nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 99.6997 percent of its residents. Vaccination is a great way to avoid negative health outcomes for the elderly population. Lastly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: C

The next area we rated was short-term care. We awarded this nursing home an acceptable grade in this area, with a grade of C. While this isn't as strong as several of this nursing home's other scores, it is nevertheless not a bad grade. In crafting these short-term care ratings, we assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. The objective is to devise a measure for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. Fortunately, it appear that this facility employs registered nurses. Not all facilities employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, according to the information this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The last datapoint we considered in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 4.8 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is actually below average.
