Facility Inspections
While we were not complementary of this nursing home's overall performance, it did receive an impressive inspection report this year with few dings from the applicable government inspectors. As a result, it received one of our better grades in that category with a B+. Inspection ratings are based on several pieces of information found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are a key thing to look for on these inspections. You should especially avoid facilities with severe deficiencies linked to endangerment of patients. Although this place had some deficiencies on its report, none were serious based on CMS' scale. A couple minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.
Nurse Quality
We also ended up giving this facility a fairly respectable grade in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of C. Our nursing grade considers a host of subcategories. The most heavily weighted variable is the number of hours nurses spend with residents. This nursing home averages just 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low figure. Finally, we also looked at several nursing quality-based metrics. Although this facility got dinged a bit for its nursing hours per resident, it excelled in a few of these quality-based measures. With fewer than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it did remarkably well in this metric. This can be a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can generally be avoided by offering better nursing care, such as having a system of moving residents even once per day.

Short-term Care Quality
Moving on to the category of short-term care, this nursing home received a grade of just D in this area. Our short-term care ratings are thought to be most important for patients requiring rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation usually mandates higher levels of highly-skilled nursing services. This includes not only nursing services, but also physical and occupational therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. Considering its score in this category, we weren't surprised to find that this facility is well below average in terms of the number of registered nurse and physical therapy hours provided to its patients based on the measures we looked at. The final statistic we considered in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 5.3 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these subpar metrics sunk this nursing home's short-term care score.
Long-term Care Quality
The last category we looked at is long-term care, which is a weak spot for this facility. We gave this facility a D for long-term care. If you are looking for services other than rehabilitation, you should take a close look at long-term care ratings. In addition to assessing the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Surprisingly, this place also keeps its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had just 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Unfortunately, a few of its other scores in this category weren't as favorable as these.
