Medical Staff Hours Per Patient (2019)
To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for its nursing grade. We weighed the levels of nurses working for the facility, in addition to the quantity of hours the nurses worked with patients, in determining our rating in this area. This place boasts a really impressive 6.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day, of which a significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses. This is one of the most highly trained levels of nurses. This is among the higher totals of nursing hours we were able to find. In addition to providing high levels of care, this facility also excelled in the quality-based metrics we assessed. It performed as well as any facility in the state in terms of avoiding major falls and pressure ulcers.
Long-term Care Quality
This exemplary facility also was superb in the category of long-term care, where we awarded it a score of A+. Very few nursing homes fared better in this category. In a long-term care setting, the facility's primary goal is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. This facility really impressed us in this category.
This facility has received near flawless health inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of A in this category. Our inspection grades are based on many items found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that receive favorable grades in this area tend to have very few deficiencies on their reports. Most importantly, these nursing homes generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. Fortunately, although this facility had some minor dings on its report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means that the government inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
Moving on to the fourth category, this nursing home received an excellent short-term care grade. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A in that area, resulting in this facility receiving straight A's. Short-term care grades are commonly employed to grade a nursing home's rehabilitation services. To offer highly graded rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to feature higher levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. One reason for this nursing home's favorable score in this area is it provides more care from registered nurses to its patients than a typical nursing home. The last item we considered in this area is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in South Carolina in this area with 59.5 percent of its residents returning home. At most facilities, less than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
