One of the reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it earned an A+ short-term care grade. This is as good as it gets in this area. In computing our short-term care ratings, we analyze a facility's levels of skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other highly trained professionals. This grade is frequently a meaningful assessment of the facility's rehabilitation. This nursing home is substantially above the national average in terms of its quantity of both physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its residents. In fact, it provided about 50% more care per resident from both of these care providers than the average facility provided. These are generally good indicators of quality short-term care. Finally, we looked at the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of nursing homes in the nation with 70.6 percent of its patients returning home.

In addition, this facility was given high marks in the area of long-term care. For this reason, it received one of our highest grades in that area with a score of A+. Nursing homes that excel in long-term care typically are well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to patients. After assessing the very impressive nursing hours and other staffing provided by this nursing home, we then looked at the facility's vaccination record. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is much higher than most nursing homes. This combination proved to be effective as this nursing home was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility excelled in our nursing rating. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. When computing our nursing ratings, we factor in both nursing hours and the levels of licensure of those nurses. This particular facility provided 6.6 hours of nursing care per patient daily. This was one of the highest totals we found. In addition, we found that a significant portion of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. On top of providing impressive levels of care, this facility also excelled in several of the quality measures we looked at. With below 5 percent of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, it fared as well as any nursing home the state in this category. This is typically a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls. Many pressure ulcers could be avoided by providing better nursing care and having a policy of turning residents more often.

Finishing off this facility's impressive resume, we gave this nursing home an elite grade of A for our inspections rating. With this grade, the nursing home completes its straight A report card. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing these inspection scores. One key factor is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some are relatively minor. Fortunately, although this place had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are ones labeled as categories G through L. This means the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
