West Valley Post Acute is the sole option we found in West Hills, California. Sporting an overall grade of D, this is a lower end nursing home. This wasn't the worse nursing home we found, but we'd still be very reluctant to recommend it. Facility Inspections
While we were not high on this facility overall, we awarded it a grade of B for our inspections rating. This grade is much better than the facility's overall score. Arguably the most significant factor we look at in computing our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. It is generally best to avoid nursing homes that had a long list of severe deficiencies. Although this nursing home had some deficiencies on its report, none of them were major deficiencies based on CMS' deficiency scale. A couple minor deficiencies are not the end of the world.
Short-term Care Quality
The next most favorable category we gave this nursing home in any area came in the category of short-term care, where we gave it a B-. In our short-term care grade, we seek to craft a sound measure for rehabilitation services. In this process, we assess a nursing home's scope of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as respiratory therapy. This nursing home boosted its score in this category by offering more physical therapy hours to its residents than the average facility. Lastly, we assessed the percentage of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that it performed decently in this area, with 45.4 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
We awarded this facility a respectable grade in the area of nursing as well, with a grade of B-. Nursing scores are based in large part on levels of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 3.7 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, our nursing scores also include quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This facility performed above average in this area.
Long-term Care Quality
The next area we looked at is long-term care, was this nursing home's weakest category. We gave this nursing home a grade of D in this category. In a long-term care environment, the nursing home's primary objective is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. On top of assessing the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is better than the average nursing home. Lastly, we looked at the facility's number of hospitalizations. We found that this place fared much worse with 2.87 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. Unfortunately, this figure is nearly double the national average.
