Facility Inspections
Although we did not rate this nursing home favorably overall, we want to point out its excellent inspections in recent years. We awarded them an A in this category. Inspection grades are tied to several pieces of information found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are a key thing to look for on these inspections. Most importantly, you should avoid facilities that have severe deficiencies associated with risks to resident well being. While this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its report, none were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is always a good sign.
Long-term Care Quality
Additionally, we also wanted to point out that this facility was awarded strong long-term care marks this year. We gave them one of our more impressive scores in this category, with a grade of B. This proved to be the nursing home's second strongest grade. Long-term care scores in this range generally require both 24/7 care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine medical care. On top of considering the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 93.51145 percent of its residents, which is a few points lower than we expected. Lastly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.13 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home has less hospitalizations than most nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
We also wanted to draw your attention to this facility's poor nursing grade where it received an F. Our nursing rating is based on quite a few factors, most of which are tied to levels of nurse staffing. With a meager 3.1 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis, this nursing home's nurse staffing levels were well below average. This place also had terrible scores in some of the quality-based measures to go along with its low nursing hours. We looked at the percentage of patients experiencing pressure ulcers and we were very disappointed. This facility was at approximately 1.5 times the national average in this metric.
Short-term Care Quality
The next area we analyzed is short-term care, where this facility was given an abysmal score here also. We gave it an abysmal F in this area, which is obviously a major concern. In determining our short-term care grades, we analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our objective is to create a measure for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. Given its weak score in this area, we were not stunned to find that this facility provided significantly fewer registered nurse hours per resident than most other nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at the number of residents that ultimately were able to return home from this nursing home. This nursing home didn't fare well in this area. In fact, we found that just 35.4 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home. This figure was quite a bit off the national average.
