Facility Inspections
One of the many reasons this ended up being a quality nursing home is that it received a very impressive grade in inspections. Inspections ended up being its best category. In that category, we gave this facility an A. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating our inspection scores. One key factor is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some can be relatively minor. Although this place had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were major deficiencies based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
We also want to draw your attention to the fact that this facility received a strong score of A in our short-term care area. In determining our short-term care ratings, we scrutinize a nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists occupational therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This category is typically a solid assessment of a facility's rehabilitation services. Fortunately, it looks like this facility has registered nurses on staff. Not all nursing homes employs these types of nurses. On the other hand, according to the information they provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. Finally, we assessed the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 5.3 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home.

Long-term Care Quality
The next category we looked at was long-term care. Adding to its dominant resume, this nursing home also performed well in this category. In fact, it received a of A- for that area. When facilities receive a grade in this range in this category it generally means it's well-staffed and is an overall good place to reside on a permanent basis. On top of looking at the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we also looked at the number of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents, which is what we like to see. Pneumonia sadly can be a deadly condition for nursing home residents so we like it when a nursing home does not roll the dice on this issue. Clearly, this nursing home is doing something right in this area as it also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. It had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
Nurse Quality
In the last category we graded, this facility was given a very favorable grade of B+ in our nursing category. With this score, the facility rounded out an elite report card. Our nursing score consists of several data points, but the primary one is the level of nurse hours per patient per week. This facility provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also looked at certain nursing quality measures in computing our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these data points as predictive measures of the caliber of nursing care being provided, since better care tends to reduce these problems.
