Facility Inspections

Grade: A-minus

In addition to being a respectable facility overall, this facility really excelled in the category of inspections, where it received an A-. Few facilities performed better in this area. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing these inspection ratings. One of those factors is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some of these are quite insignificant. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. This is very impressive. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

We also gave this nursing home a positive grade in long-term care. This facility received a B+ in this area, which is one of our more impressive grades. When facilities receive this type of grade in this category it is a good sign for patient care and indicates that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses and aids. On top of looking at the volume of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its residents, which is very impressive. Pneumonia is often a dangerous health condition for nursing home residents so we prefer when a facility doesn't take any chances. Lastly, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.49 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this nursing home has fewer hospitalizations than the average nursing home.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

This nursing home also received an impressive short-term care score. Indeed, we gave it a B+ in this category, which happens to be one of our more favorable scores. Our short-term care grades are based in part on a nursing home's quantity of skilled skilled healthcare professionals. This includes a broad scope of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, in addition to other forms of therapy. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. The final metric we looked at in this category is the percentage of patients that eventually returned home from the nursing home. This place fared as well as just about any facility in Virginia in this area with 73.2 percent of its patients returning home. At most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: F

This nursing home's least impressive category was nursing, which is the final category we assessed. Unfortunately, we gave it an F for this area. Despite a few acceptable scores in other categories, this score is nevertheless concerning so we felt obligated to point it out. In computing a facility's nursing rating, we consider the quantity of hours nurses are with patients and the skill levels of those nurses. This facility averaged a meager 2.2 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This is well below average. To go along with its subpar totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this nursing home also did not perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in calculating our nursing ratings. We looked at the percentage of patients sustaining major falls and pressure ulcers. This place had more pressure ulcers and falls than the average nursing home. This may be a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores and falls are preventable with better nursing care. Unfortunately, these metrics pulled down this nursing home's nursing rating significantly.
