Although we did not rate this facility favorably overall, we want to point out its relatively favorable inspections in recent years. We gave it a respectable grade of B+ in this area, which was much better than its overall score. Arguably the most critical factor we look at in calculating our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a nursing home's inspection reports. It is generally in your best interest to avoid nursing homes that have a long list of deficiencies. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. In spite of this deficiency, this place still had a relatively positive inspection report.

This facility received its second best category grade in the area of short-term care. We awarded this facility a grade of B- in this area, which is a decent grade. In forming these short-term care ratings, we look at the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. Our purpose is to formulate a scale for comparing the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. In this place's case, we were surprised to learn that it actually provides less registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than the typical facility. The hope is that this does not adversely affect the quality of care. The final metric we assessed in this category is the percentage of residents that who were able to eventually return home from the facility. This facility performed better in this statistic. This place performed better than most facilities in this area with 50 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, at most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.

This nursing home actually received a decent grade in the area of nursing as well. We awarded it a grade of C for that category, which is not a bad score. When computing a nursing home's nursing score, we look at the amount of time nurses commit to residents and the level of licensure of the nurses. This particular nursing home provided 3.8 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, our nursing grade also includes applicable quality-based metrics. While this place excelled in terms of quantity of nursing hours, it fell short in certain statistics that related to quality. This nursing home's nursing rating was pulled down by its subpar performance in the area of minimizing pressure ulcers. We found that 12.9 percent of this facility's residents suffered from pressure ulcers. Since many pressure ulcers could be avoided with good nursing protocols, we reduce a nursing home's nursing grade when we see this kind of prevalence of pressure ulcers.

Our final category is long-term care, in which we gave this nursing home a grade of C in that category. In determining our long-term care scores, we analyze the personal care offered to the nursing home's patients. After assessing the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination statistics. Candidly, we were a bit bothered by the fact that this nursing home vaccinated 89.3617 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which happens to be quite a bit lower than average. Finally, we looked at the nursing home's number of hospitalizations. We found that this place had 2.07 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. While this figure is quite a bit higher than the national average, this number may be skewed for some facilities due to the preexisting medical conditions of residents.
