Facility Inspections
The main reason this ended up being a decent nursing home is that it received an elite inspection score. Its inspection grade was far superior to its overall score. In the inspections category, we gave it an A. Arguably the most significant factor we consider in computing our inspection grades is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Nursing homes with better scores in this category most likely dodged the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also was given a strong long-term care grade. Indeed, we gave it a B+ in this category, which happens to be one of our more favorable scores. For residents seeking a permanent place to live rather than skilled nursing, long-term care is a very important category. One of the factors we considered in addition to nurse's aid hours is vaccinations. This facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 85.15284 percent of its residents. While its vaccination rate was a bit lower than we hoped for, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.14 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility has less hospitalizations than the majority of nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home's nursing grade appears to be one of its better features. The facility received a grade of C in this category. The nursing rating assesses many subcategories, most of which are associated with nursing hours. Based on the CMS data, this nursing home offers 3.6 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also looked at a few quality-based metrics in computing our nursing grades. This nursing home was above average in two of the major areas we assessed, with good scores for minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls.
Short-term Care Quality
The last area we assessed is short-term care, which turned out to be this nursing home's weakest area. We awarded this facility a grade of D in that area. Of course, this score hurt the facility's overall grade to some degree. In computing our short-term care scores, we size up the facility's levels of skilled nursing, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other highly trained professionals. This area is often a solid measure of the nursing home's rehabilitation. Unfortunately, we found that this place provided less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per patient than most other facilities. Finally, we looked at the percentage of patients who who were able to eventually return home from this nursing home. This facility didn't fare well here either. We found that just 46.6 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
