Facility Inspections
Although we were not high on this nursing home's overall performance, it did receive an impressive inspection report this year with few dings from the applicable government inspectors. As a result, it received one of our better grades in that area with a B. Inspection grades are based on several datapoints found on the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are a key item to look for on these inspections. Most importantly, you should avoid facilities that have severe deficiencies linked to risks to resident well being. This place received 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none were considered to be severe deficiencies. This tells you that the government inspectors did not deem any of these deficiencies to create an immediate threat to resident safety or health. A couple minor deficiencies are not necessarily the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home's second most favorable category turned out to be its long-term care grade, where it was awarded a C. In a long-term care environment, the primary goal is to keep patients healthy and safe. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate residents. Once we assessed the quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination records. This nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which is higher than most nursing homes. Lastly, this facility was also able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.

Short-term Care Quality
This facility's next most favorable area ended up being short-term care. In that area, we awarded this nursing home a grade of C. In computing our short-term care grades, we analyze the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, speech therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our goal is to formulate a measure for comparing the rehabilitation services of different nursing homes. We were surprised to find that this place was below average in the two key staffing areas we assessed. It supplied fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other facilities. The final datapoint we assessed in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the facility and return home. We discovered that just 4.6 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is actually below average.
Nurse Quality
The next area we assessed is nursing, which is a weak link for this nursing home. We gave this nursing home a grade of just D for the area of nursing. Our nursing score assesses many data points, most of which are associated with levels of nurse staffing. This place offered a meager 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient each day. This is an alarmingly low total. To pair with its subpar totals in the area of nursing hours per patient, this place also did not perform as well in the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing ratings. We looked at the percent of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and major falls. This facility had more falls and pressure ulcers than the average facility.
