Short-term Care Quality
In addition to faring well overall, this nursing home received even higher grades in the area of short-term care. It received one of our best grades in that area with an A. Our short-term care grade is typically employed to judge a facility's performance with rehabilitation. In order to have quality rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to provide higher levels of skilled nursing. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. When we assessed this facility's nursing hours, we found it offered more care from registered nurses than most nursing homes. The final item we considered in this category is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. This place performed as well as just about any facility in Maryland in this area with 64.3 percent of its patients returning home.
Facility Inspections
In addition, this nursing home also excelled in inspections, where it received an A. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating these inspection ratings. One of those factors is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some of these end up being relatively insignificant. This facility was assessed 3 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe deficiencies. This indicates that the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies to pose an imminent risk to resident health or safety. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor leaves us less concerned with this inspection report.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home also received a strong nursing score. In fact, we awarded it an above average grade of B in this area. When calculating our nursing scores, we look at both the number of hours nurses spend with residents and the levels of licensure of those nurses. This particular nursing home provided 3.9 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis, which was above average. Finally, this facility also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at. For example, in terms of the number of its patients suffering falls which lead to serious injury, this facility performed as well as any facility in the nation. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can many times be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility's worst category is long-term care, which is the final area we scored. Sadly, it received a lowly F in this area. In spite of some excellent scores in other categories, this grade is still somewhat disappointing so we felt obligated to make sure you are aware. In a long-term care environment, the nursing home's primary goal is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. After assessing nursing care provided by this nursing home, we then looked at the nursing home's vaccination records. Due to its grade in this category, it is surprising to discover that this facility performed reasonably well both of these subcategories. Indeed, this facility vaccinated 98.68421 percent of its residents against pneumonia, which appears to be higher than the majority of nursing homes. Surprisingly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.25 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home has fewer hospitalizations than many nursing homes. Unfortunately, a few of its other scores in this category were not as favorable as these.
