Short-term Care Quality
One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it earned an A+ in short-term care. In the area of short-term care, we try to assess indicators of a facility's rehabilitation services. We assess the facility's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses and various therapists. This facility excelled at the highest level in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered about 50% more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. This is an excellent sign. Lastly, we looked at the number of patients who returned home from this nursing home. On top of excelling in the area of physical therapy staffing, we found that it performed as well as just about any facility in this area with 70.1 percent of its patients returning home.
Facility Inspections
In addition, this nursing home also performed well in inspections, which is based on the facility's inspections. We gave it an A- for that category, which is one of our highest grades. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in calculating these inspection ratings. One critical factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some of these end up being relatively insignificant. This nursing home was hit with 5 deficiencies on its inspection report, but we were relieved to see that none of the deficiencies were considered to be severe. This tells you that the government inspectors did not consider any of these deficiencies to be an imminent threat to resident health or safety. A few minor deficiencies aren't something to panic about.
Nurse Quality
This facility received even higher grades in the area of nursing. In fact, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A-. Our nursing score includes several datapoints, however, the primary consideration is the level of nurse hours per patient per week. This nursing home provided 5 hours of nursing care per resident each day. This was one of the higher totals we found. In addition, we found that a significant percentage of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. In addition to offering high levels of nursing care, this place also fared well in several of the quality-based metrics we looked at. For example, in terms of the number of its patients suffering from pressure ulcers, this nursing home outpaced the national average. This is usually an indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Pressure ulcers can generallY be prevented with better nursing care and having a policy of regularly turning patients to prevent bed sores.
Long-term Care Quality
The final area we assessed was long-term care, which ended up being this nursing home's worst area. We gave this facility a grade of D in this area. Nevertheless, we would not judge this facility based solely on this area, since it was given some very strong scores in other areas. Facilities that do not fare well in long-term care typically are not as well-staffed and are lagging in some of the areas of routine personal care we assessed. Even though we determined this facility had an impressive quantity of nursing care provided by nurses aids and other nursing staff, we found its vaccination rate to be a bit low. This facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to just 87.27273 percent of its patients. This is a figure we'd really like to see this nursing home improve on. To our surprise, this place was not as bad as we expected at keeping its patients out of the hospital. Although it had 1.95 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted statistic was not bad since it had some more complicated patients.
