Short-term Care Quality
In addition to being a first-rate facility overall, this facility also excelled in our short-term care category, where it received an elite grade of A+. Few facilities performed better in this category. Our short-term care ratings are considered to be most important for folks needing rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation usually utilizes more highly-skilled nursing services. This means not just nursing, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other types of therapy. This nursing home excelled in the two key staffing areas we assessed. In fact, it supplied about 50% more care from registered nurses and physical therapists than the average nursing home. This is certainly a great sign. The final metric we looked at in this category is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in Florida in this area with 76.9 percent of its residents returning home. With most facilities, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Nurse Quality
This nursing home also received an A+ nursing grade, making it one of the few nursing homes to receive multiple A+ category grades. Our nursing score is largely based on the nursing home's level of nurse staffing. This place boasts a really impressive 5.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day, of which a significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses. This is one of the most highly highly trained levels of nurses. On top of offering impressive levels of nursing care, this place was also above average in several of the major quality measures we looked at in this category. For example, it performed well in terms of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. These are generally good measures of the quality of nursing care a facility offers.
Facility Inspections
This facility also received a nearly flawless inspection report. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that category with a score of A+. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing our inspection grades. One key factor is deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some of these are quite minor. Fortunately, although this nursing home had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe made us feel better about this inspection report.
Long-term Care Quality
Moving on to the final area, this nursing home also excelled in our long-term care category. We awarded it an A- in this category. This finalized a straight A report card. When facilities receive this type of score in this category it is a good sign for patient care and suggests that the facility is well-staffed with nurses and aids. On top of looking at the impressive quantity of care provided by nurses aids and other staff at this facility, we also were impressed by the nursing home's record for vaccinations. This facility gave the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its residents, which is very impressive. The last datapoint we looked at was the nursing home's hospitalization rate. We found that this nursing home had 1.89 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is middle of the pack in this area.
