Facility Inspections
This nursing home earned a solid overall grade as described above, but we really wanted to emphasize its excellent government inspections in recent years. We gave them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. These inspection ratings weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can find more information about each of these issues by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Although this facility had some deficiencies on its inspection report, none were severe based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also received high marks in the area of long-term care, with a strong score of A in this category. When facilities receive this type of score in long-term care it is usually a good sign for patient care and indicates that the place is well-staffed with nurses and aids. One of the statistics we considered in addition to nursing hours was vaccines. This facility administered the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccination is a reliable method to avoid unnecessary hospitalizations for the senior population. Clearly, this place is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Short-term Care Quality
This facility was given an F in the area of short-term care. Unfortunately, this is a rock-bottom grade. In our short-term care rating, we endeavor to craft a valuable measure for rehabilitation services. In doing so, we analyze a facility's levels of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. In this nursing home's case, we found that it provides less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. The final measure we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We discovered that just 3.9 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home, which is well below average. The combination of these poor statistics sunk this facility's short-term care score.
Nurse Quality
The final category we rated was nursing. Unfortunately, we gave it a lowly F in this category, which is a poor score. This is obviously a significant concern. The nursing score includes quite a few components, but the most important consideration is the number of nurse hours per patient per week. This place offered only 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This is not a very impressive figure. On top of its weak nursing hour totals, this facility earned suboptimal marks in several of the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing ratings. We found that a higher percentage of this nursing home's patients sustained falls leading to major injury.
