Short-term Care Quality
In addition to receiving a great overall grade, this facility also received A+ short-term care grade. Our short-term care grade is generally employed to score a facility's performance with rehabilitation. To have good rehabilitation services, facilities generally must provide better levels of highly skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly skilled individuals. This facility excelled at the highest level in the two key staffing areas we looked at. It offered about 50% more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the average nursing home. This is an excellent sign. The final datapoint we assessed in this area is the percentage of patients that ultimately returned home from the facility. We found that it fared as well as just about any facility in California in this area with 71.1 percent of its residents returning home.
Nurse Quality
We also wanted to emphasize the fact that this facility excelled in our nursing rating. We awarded them an impressive grade of A+ in this category. Nursing ratings are largely based on the nursing home's nurse staffing. This place boasts a really impressive 7.7 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis, of which a significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses. This is one of the most highly trained levels of nurses. On top of offering impressive levels of care, this nursing home also excelled in the quality-based metrics we looked at. By way of illustration, it performed as well as any nursing home in the country when it comes to avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We view these statistics as good measures of the quality of nursing care being provided.
Facility Inspections
This facility has received near flawless health inspections in recent years. We awarded them an impressive grade of A in this category. Our inspection grades are tied to many pieces of information located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Places that excel in this area typically have very few deficiencies on those reports. Most importantly, these facilities generally do not have any severe deficiencies which are associated with risks to patient safety. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.
Long-term Care Quality
The final category we analyzed ended up being this nursing home's weakest category. However, even in its weakest link we still awarded it a decent grade of B- in our long-term care category. In calculating these long-term care grades, we quantify the facility's ability to maintain its permanent residents' health and quality of life. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Unfortunately, we were not able to find this place's vaccination data. Finally, this place keeps its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
