Registered Staff Hours
Nurse Quality
On top of having a decent overall grade, we also wanted to point out that this facility received favorable nursing marks this year. We awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a B+. This proved to be the facility's top score. Our nursing rating is based on the facility's level of nurse staffing. We look at both the levels of skill of those nurses and the number of hours spent with patients. This nursing home provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality-based metrics and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility Iowa in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can typically be prevented by offering better nursing care, such as by having a policy of moving residents at least once a day.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility's short-term care grade is one of its more favorable features. The nursing home received a grade of B- in this area. Our short-term care ratings are presumably most important for folks needing rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation usually requires more skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes not only nursing services, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other forms of therapy. We found that this facility was below average in the two key staffing areas we focus on. In fact, it offered fewer registered nurse and physical therapist hours per resident than most other nursing homes. The last statistic we considered in this area is the percentage of patients who who were able to eventually return home from the nursing home. We found that just 4.6 percent of this nursing home's patients returned home. Unfortunately, this was below the national average.

Facility Inspections
This nursing home earned a solid inspection report this year as well, with few dings from the applicable government inspectors. As a result, it received one of our better grades in that category with a score of B-. Our inspection ratings are tied to items located in the a nursing home's recent inspection reports. Deficiencies are an important thing to look for on these inspections. Severe deficiencies indicate a risk to patient safety. This nursing home was hit with 4 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be major deficiencies. This indicates that the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies to be an imminent threat to resident safety or health. A few minor deficiencies shouldn't lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.
Long-term Care Quality
The final area we rated is long-term care, is this facility's weakest area. We awarded this nursing home a D in that area. For prospective patients looking for a permanent residence rather than rehabilitation, long-term care grades are an important measure. In addition to assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we also looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. To our surprise, this place also keeps its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days. Sadly, a few of its other scores in the category weren't as favorable as these.
