Medical Staff Hours Per Patient (2019)
Nurse Quality
One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an A+ nursing grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this category. The nursing grade weighs several datapoints. The most heavily weighted one is the quantity of hours nurses spent with patients. This facility provided 6.4 hours of nursing care per resident each day, which is among the highest totals in the country. A significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most highly skilled levels of nurses. We are very impressed by both of these statistics. On top of providing high levels of care, this place also excelled in the quality measures we looked at. For example, it performed as well as any nursing home in the nation in the area of avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these metrics as predictive measures of the quality of nursing care being provided.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also was awarded an A+ long-term care grade, making it one of the few facilities to be given more than one A+ category scores. Facilities that excel in this category tend to provide residents with closer supervision and stay on top of routine healthcare services. In addition to elite nursing hour statistics, this facility's vaccination statistics was superb also. In fact, this nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia. This combination proved to be successful as this facility also excelled at keeping its residents out of the hospital. It had only 0 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
Facility Inspections
The next category we looked at was inspections, where this facility also received an A+ grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing our inspection scores. One key factor is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some are quite minor. While this facility had a few deficiencies on its inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Short-term Care Quality
Turning to our fourth category, this facility was given a strong short-term care rating. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A- in that category, rounding out a straight A profile. Short-term care grades are commonly employed to assess a facility's rehabilitation services. To offer highly scored rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to provide better levels of skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. When we assessed this facility's nursing hours, we found it offered substantially more care from registered nurses than most nursing homes. The last statistic we assessed in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the facility and return home. We found that 0 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home.
