Registered Staff Hours
In addition to a phenomenal overall grade, this facility also received A+ nursing grade. Our nursing rating weighs many components, many of which are tied to levels of nurse staffing. This place provides an incredible 4.8 hours of nursing care per resident each day. Out of this total, many of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which is one of the most highly trained levels of nurses. On top of offering impressive levels of care, this facility also excelled in the quality-based metrics we looked at. For example, it performed as well as any facility in Utah when it comes to avoiding pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these statistics as reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care offered.
Short-term Care Quality
We also awarded this nursing home a score of A+ for its short-term care grade. Our short-term care grades are probably more meaningful for people needing a nursing home for rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually utilizes additional highly-skilled nursing. This means not merely nursing services, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. This nursing home is the gold standard in terms of skilled nursing staffing. The facility offered approximately 50% more registered nurse and physical therapist hours per patient than a typical facility. The final item we looked at in this category is the percentage of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Utah in this area with 67.4 percent of its patients returning home.

We also wanted to point out this nursing home's nearly flawless inspections in recent years. We gave them a grade of B+ in this category. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating these inspection scores. One of those factors is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some of these can be quite insignificant. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.
Long-term Care Quality
Turning to the next category, this nursing home was awarded a strong long-term care score. While this isn't nearly as elite as a few of its other category grades, this is nevertheless one of our more impressive scores a facility can receive. When facilities receive a grade in this range in this category it generally means it's well-staffed and is an overall good place to live on a permanent basis. In addition to offering very impressive levels of nursing care and other staffing, this nursing home administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. This figure is also significantly better than the majority of nursing homes. This combination proved to be effective as this facility was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.
