Facility Inspections
In addition to receiving a great overall score, this facility fared even better in our inspections category which is associated with the nursing home's recent government inspections. In fact, we gave it a grade of A- for this area, which is one of our best scores. Arguably the most significant factor we look at in computing our inspection ratings is deficiencies. These deficiencies can be found on a facility's recent inspection reports. Nursing homes with higher scores in this area most likely avoided the more severe deficiencies involving health risks or even death. While this facility had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none were serious based on CMS' deficiency scale. The fact that none of the deficiencies were severe made us feel better about this inspection report.
Short-term Care Quality
This nursing home also received a strong short-term care score. Indeed, we gave it an above average grade of B in this category. Short-term care grades are typically used to assess a facility's performance with rehabilitation. In order to provide highly graded rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to offer better levels of highly skilled nursing. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other highly trained professionals. This nursing home employs both physical therapists and registered nurses. Not all facilities employ these skilled professionals. This nursing home performed much better in the final datapoint we assessed in this area, which was the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. This place performed as well as just about any nursing home in Texas in this area with 62.9 percent of its residents returning home. Unfortunately, at most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.

Long-term Care Quality
Turning to another strength for this nursing home, we awarded them one of our better grades in our long-term care category as well, with a B. When nursing homes receive a score in this range in long-term care it generally means it's well-staffed and is a quality place to live on a permanent basis. On top of offering elite levels of nursing care and other staffing, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. This figure is also significantly higher than the majority of nursing homes. Finally, we looked at its number of hospitalizations. Here we found that this place had 3.84 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days. While this admittedly wasn't as favorable as most of its other scores in this area, this figure may be skewed for some facilities based on some of the preexisting medical conditions of patients.
Nurse Quality
The last area we looked at is nursing. We gave it a grade of C in that area. This is a perfectly acceptable grade in this category. The nursing grade analyzes several data points, most of which are tied to nursing hours. This facility provides an impressive 4.1 hours of nursing care per patient per day. This is one of the higher totals in Texas. Lastly, our nursing ratings also factor in quality-based metrics, such as avoiding major falls. This place performed admirably in this metric.
