Facility Inspections
We want to draw your attention to the fact that this facility outperformed its overall grade in the area of inspections. In fact, it received an excellent inspection report this year. As a result, it received one of our best grades in that category with a grade of A+. Inspection grades account for several factors included in a nursing home's inspection reports. One key criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher scores in this area tend to have very few severe deficiencies. While this nursing home had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those found in categories G through L. This means the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A few minor deficiencies shouldn't lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.
Short-term Care Quality
This facility also was given a positive grade in our short-term care category. We awarded this facility a better than average grade of B in that category. Our short-term care scores are meaningful for patients in need of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically requires higher levels of highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes a vast spectrum of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. We were pleased to find that this nursing home employs both registered nurses and physical therapists. The same can't be said for all nursing homes. Finally, we assessed the number of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home, which as an area this nursing home performed much more favorably. We found that it outperformed the vast majority of facilities in this area with 65.8 percent of its patients returning home. This is a significantly higher rate than most facilities.

Long-term Care Quality
This nursing home was awarded its next most favorable category grade in the area of long-term care. We gave this facility a grade of C in this area, which is an acceptable grade. In our long-term care assessment, we focus more on the amount of care provided by a nursing home, along with a handful of quality measures. In addition to looking at the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the percentage of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home administered the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is higher than the majority of nursing homes. Finally, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. With only 1.08 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, this facility had less hospitalizations than the majority of nursing homes.
Nurse Quality
The last category we scored is nursing, which was this nursing home's weakest area. We gave it a lowly F in this category, which is obviously concerning. Nursing scores are primarily associated with a facility's level of nurse staffing. This facility offered just 1.4 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This is not a very impressive figure. On top of receiving below average marks for total nursing hours, this facility was less impressive in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in computing our nursing scores. We looked at the percentage of patients sustaining pressure ulcers and found that this nursing home was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in this metric. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many pressure ulcers are preventable with better nursing care. This statistic really dragged down this facility's nursing rating significantly.
