While this nursing home's overall grade was decent, it really excelled in the area of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a grade of A- for that category, which is one of our best scores. One of this nursing home's better category scores was in the category of short-term care. This ended up being its second most respectable category. In that area, we gave this facility a grade of C. Short-term care grades are generally used to gauge a facility's rehabilitation services. In order to offer highly scored rehabilitation services, facilities generally need to provide better levels of highly skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other types of therapists. We found that this nursing home was below average in the two key staffing areas we assessed. It supplied fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most other nursing homes. Finally, we assessed the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 4.7 percent of this facility's residents returned home. At most facilities, closer to half of their residents are able to return home so this figure is below average.

Turning to the area of long-term care, this facility was given just a D in that area. Long-term care scores of this caliber generally are a bad sign for the quantity and quality of care provided by nurses and aids, as well as the levels of routine medical care available. One of the criteria we considered in addition to nursing hours was vaccinations. We were a bit bothered by the fact that this facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to only 86.14958 percent of its residents. Our nursing score consists of many factors, but the most important consideration is the quantity of nurse hours per patient per week. This place provided only 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. In addition to receiving below average marks for total nursing hours, this facility was less impressive in some of the quality-based metrics we looked at in determining our nursing grades. We looked at the percentage of residents experiencing pressure ulcers and found that this facility was at roughly 150 percent of the national average in this metric. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores are believed to be preventable with better nursing care. This statistic dragged down this facility's nursing grade substantially.
