Short-term Care Quality

Grade: A-plus

One of the reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an A+ in short-term care. This is as good as it gets in this area. In crafting these short-term care scores, we analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The goal is to devise a tool for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different facilities. Fortunately, it appear that this facility employs registered nurses. Not all nursing homes employs these skilled professionals. However, based on the information this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The final statistic we considered in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We found that 6.6 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.

Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

This nursing home also received an A+ inspection grade, making it one of the few nursing homes to receive multiple A+'s in our category grades. This grade is based on the facility's government inspections. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating these inspection ratings. One of those factors is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some can be relatively insignificant. While this nursing home had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' scale. A couple minor deficiencies are not necessarily something to panic about.

Nurse Quality

Grade: B-plus

In addition, this facility also received favorable nursing grades this year. In fact, we awarded them one of our better scores in that area, with a grade of B+. In determining our nursing grades, we factor in both staffing levels and the skill levels of the nurses. This particular nursing home provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed several nursing quality measures and this nursing home excelled in some of these areas. With less than five percent of its residents sustaining pressure ulcers, it performed as well as any facility the nation in this category. This is generally a good indicator of quality nursing care. Pressure ulcers can frequently be avoided by providing better nursing care, such as by having a policy of moving patients at least once a day.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

In the final category we analyzed, this facility was awarded a very favorable grade of B+ in our long-term care category. With this score, the facility rounded out a first-rate profile. Long-term care ratings of this caliber generally require both around the clock care from nurses and aids, as well as quality routine healthcare services. In addition to considering the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the percentage of residents vaccinated for pneumonia. This facility provided the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia is often a deadly condition for nursing home patients so we strongly prefer when a facility doesn't take any chances. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Grade: A-minus

In The Waterford, 1.78% of Patients had UTIs

This statistic is an indication of the percent of long-term patients which suffered from urinary tract infections. Although a higher rate infections could reflect poorly on a facility's nursing care, it is difficult to compare between nursing homes due to nursing homes having inconsistent reporting standards.

Short-term Care: Rehospitalizations

Grade: B

In The Waterford, 14.03 Percentage of Residents Rehospitalized

Measures the number of times residents are rehospitalized per thousand days of short-term resident care. Minimizing rehospitalizations during rehabilitation is critical to restoring the physical abilities of residents.

Short-term Care: ER Visits

Grade: C

In The Waterford, 9.64 Percentage of Patients

This indicates the number of emergency room visits per 1,000 days of short-term patient care. There is generally a correlation between fewer emergency room visits and the overall quality of rehabilitation.

Short-term Care: Facilitates Functional Improvement

Grade: C

In The Waterford, 77.72% Percentage of Resident

This is the percent of short-term patients who experienced functional improvements, such as with activities of daily living. Higher levels of independence with ADL's often correlates with successful rehabilitation.
