Short-term Care Quality
One of the reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received an A+ in short-term care. This is as good as it gets in this area. In crafting these short-term care scores, we analyze the nursing home's skilled nursing services, such as those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The goal is to devise a tool for sizing up the rehabilitation services of different facilities. Fortunately, it appear that this facility employs registered nurses. Not all nursing homes employs these skilled professionals. However, based on the information this nursing home provided, they do not appear to employ physical therapists. The final statistic we considered in this area is the percentage of patients who were able to leave the facility and return to the community. We found that 6.3 percent of this facility's residents were able to return home.
Facility Inspections
This nursing home also received an A+ inspection grade, making it one of the few nursing homes to receive multiple A+'s in our category grades. This grade is based on the facility's government inspections. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in calculating these inspection ratings. One of those factors is deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of these deficiencies is usually more important than the number of deficiencies, as some can be relatively insignificant. While this nursing home had some deficiencies on its government inspection report, none of them were severe based on CMS' scale. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Long-term Care Quality
Turning the page to our third area, this nursing home received a top-shelf long-term care grade. In fact, we gave it a grade of A- in that area. When nursing homes receive this kind of grade in this category it is usually a good sign for patient care and suggests that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses aids. One of the factors we considered after nursing hours is vaccinations. This facility provided the pneumonia vaccination to 100 percent of its residents. Vaccination is a great way to minimize unnecessary hospitalizations for the senior population. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. Indeed, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.
Nurse Quality
The final area we assessed is nursing. We awarded this nursing home one of our better scores in that area, with a B. Although this isn't on par with some of this nursing home's other scores, it is nevertheless an excellent grade. Our nursing rating is mostly tied to the facility's level of nurse staffing. This particular nursing home provided 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Lastly, we also factored a few quality-based metrics into our nursing grades. This facility was relatively weak in two of the major areas we focus on, with below average scores for minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. These areas are generally reliable indicators of the quality of nursing care provided.
