Facility Inspections

Grade: A-plus

To go along with its favorable overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for the area of inspections. We take several aspects of a facility's inspection report into consideration in computing our inspection grades. One of those factors is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the number of deficiencies, as some can be relatively insignificant. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Even some of the best nursing homes receive an occasional ding on their inspection report.

Long-term Care Quality

Grade: B-plus

This nursing home was given an impressive long-term care score as well. We gave it one of our better grades in that category with a score of B+. Facilities that receive this type of grade in long-term care tend to provide consistent around the clock care to make sure patients are kept in good health. After we finished looking at the amount of nursing care, we next considered the facility's vaccination record. This facility vaccinated 100 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is an impressive figure. Pneumonia is too frequently a life or death health condition for nursing home patients so we like it when a nursing home doesn't take any chances. Clearly, this facility is doing something right in this area as it was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. It had only 0.02 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Short-term Care Quality

Grade: B

The third area we assessed is short-term care. This facility was given a very positive short-term care score, with a grade of B in the area. Our short-term care grade is generally used to assess a nursing home's performance with rehabilitation To offer high-end rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally need to offer better levels of highly skilled nursing. Skilled nursing includes registered nurses, physical therapists, speech therapists and other highly trained professionals. Unfortunately, we weren't able to track down registered nurse or physical therapy staffing data for this facility. Finally, we considered the number of residents who were able to return to the community from this nursing home. We found that 5.1 percent of this facility's residents returned home.

Nurse Quality

Grade: D

The final area we looked at was nursing. We gave this facility a grade of D for nursing, rendering this the nursing home's weakest area. There are numerous subcategories included in this grade. Many of the subcategories reflect staffing levels. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a much lower figure than we are used to seeing. While this nursing home did not excel in nursing hours, it actually surprised us in some of the quality-based assessments in the nursing category, such as avoiding major falls. This facility was better than average in this metric, which is one redeeming quality we found in this category.
