Facility Inspections
One of the many reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it received an A+ inspection grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Inspection ratings weigh a host of factors found on a nursing home's inspection reports. One key criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with better grades in this category usually have few severe deficiencies. While this nursing home had some minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are those labeled as categories G through L. This means that CMS didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. We should point out that deficiency-free inspections are rare in the industry.
Short-term Care Quality
We also awarded this facility a grade of A+ for its short-term care grade. In determining our short-term care ratings, we scrutinize the nursing home's levels of highly skilled nursing services, which includes registered nurses, physical therapists respiratory therapists and other highly trained professionals. This score is generally a reliable assessment of a nursing home's rehabilitation. This facility provides more services with registered nurses and physical therapists than most facilities we looked at. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of residents that ultimately were able to return home from this facility. In addition to excelling in the area of physical therapy hours, we found that it performed as well as just about any facility in the country with 68.3 percent of its patients returning home.
Nurse Quality
To complement its strong performance in other areas, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for our inspections rating. The nursing category weighs many subcategories, many of which are tied to nursing hours. This particular nursing home provided 4.5 hours of nursing care per patient on a daily basis. This was one of the higher figures we found. Furthermore, we found that a significant percentage of this care was provided by registered nurses, which are highly skilled nurses. These are both really impressive figures. On top of offering impressive levels of care, this facility also performed well in several of the quality-based metrics we assessed. For example, in terms of the number of its patients suffering falls resulting in serious injury, this facility performed as well as any nursing home the country. Avoiding serious falls is typically an indicator that a facility has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can often be avoided if more nurses and better safety protocols are employed.
Long-term Care Quality
The final category we scored is long-term care. It received an abysmal F for this category, which is a bottom of the barrel score. We would not necessarily disqualify a nursing home because of one concerning score though. In determining our long-term care scores, we analyze the assistance with daily living received by the nursing home's patients. After considering nursing care provided by this nursing home, we turned to the nursing home's vaccination statistics. Based on its grade in this category, we were pleasantly surprised to learn that this nursing home fared reasonably well in both statistics. Indeed, this nursing home vaccinated 100 percent of its residents for pneumonia, which is higher than the majority of nursing homes. Surprisingly, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. With just 1.67 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, this nursing home had less hospitalizations than the majority of nursing homes. Sadly, a few of its other scores in this category were not as favorable as these.
