To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for our inspections rating. Inspection scores take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these factors by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This place was assessed 2 deficiencies on its inspection report, but fortunately none of the deficiencies were considered to be major deficiencies. This indicates that CMS did not deem any of these deficiencies to cause an imminent threat to patient health or safety. The fact that the deficiencies were relatively minor made us feel better about this inspection report.

This high end facility also dominated in the category of short-term care, where we awarded it a grade of A+. Few facilities performed better in this area. Our short-term care ratings are critical for individuals requiring rehabilitation. Rehabilitation typically mandates higher levels of highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means a wide range of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and occupational therapists, as well as other forms of therapy. This nursing home is substantially above average in terms of its quantity of both registered nurse and physical therapy hours offered to its patients. In fact, it offered about one and a half times as much care per resident from both of these care providers than the average facility provided. Finally, we looked at the number of patients who were able to return home from this nursing home. We found that it outperformed the majority of nursing homes in the country with 54.9 percent of its residents able to return home.

This nursing home also received a very impressive nursing grade. In that area, we awarded this facility a grade of A. Our nursing grade features many subcategories. The most important one is the number of hours nurses spent with patients. This facility provided 5.6 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis, which is among the higher totals in the country. A significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the most skilled levels of nurses. We are really impressed by both of these figures. In addition to looking at levels of nursing care, we also looked at a few quality measures in determining our nursing grades. These include minimizing residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We look at these datapoints as predictive measures of the quality of nursing care offered, since better care tends to reduce these problems.

The last category we analyzed was long-term care, in which this nursing home received a B. This actually turned out to be this facility's worst category. A facility is doing something right when it's weakest score still is superior to most nursing homes. Facilities that excel in long-term care typically are well-staffed and offer extensive hands on care to residents. On top of providing very favorable levels of nurse staffing, this facility administered the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. This percentage is also significantly higher than the vast majority of nursing homes. This combination proved to be successful as this facility was able to keep its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is an impressively low number.
