Facility Inspections
While this facility's overall score was as bad as it gets, it fared pretty well in the category of inspections. In fact, we awarded it a B+ for that area, which is one of our better scores. Inspection ratings take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can learn more about each of these issues by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Fortunately, although this nursing home had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had zero severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G through L. This means that the government inspectors didn't deem any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. A few minor deficiencies aren't necessarily the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
We were also stunned to discover that this facility earned a solid long-term care score this year. We awarded it a grade of C in this category. In a long-term care environment, the nursing home's primary goal is to maintain residents' quality of life and keep them safe. In addition to assessing the quantity of care provided by nurses and other staff, we analyzed the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Fortunately, this facility administered the vaccine to 99.2126 percent of its residents, which is a very solid statistic. This nursing home also excelled at keeping its patients out of the hospital. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low figure.

Nurse Quality
We were surprised to find that this nursing home also excelled in nursing. We gave it an D for that category, which is one of our highest scores. There are many criteria within this grade. Many of the factors relate to the quantity of nurse staffing. This nursing home offered only 0.3 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This is a very low total compared to most nursing homes. Finally, we also looked at some nursing quality measures in computing our nursing scores. This facility fared well in terms of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls.
Short-term Care Quality
The last category we looked at was short-term care. It received a lowly F for this area, which is a very poor grade. In determining our short-term care ratings, we assess the nursing home's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists and other types of skilled professionals. Our objective is to create a barometer for comparing the rehabilitation services of various facilities. Based on its poor rating in this category, we weren't surprised to discover that this nursing home offers far fewer physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most facilities. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. This wasn't a strength for this facility. We found that just 4.5 percent of this facility's residents returned home. At most facilities, around half of their residents are able to return home so this is well below average.
