Nurse Quality
In addition to a phenomenal overall grade, this facility also received A+ nursing grade. Nursing ratings are based in large part on nurse staffing levels. This place provided 4.2 hours of nursing care per resident on a daily basis, which is among the highest figures in the country. A significant percentage of those hours were provided by registered nurses, which are one of the more skilled levels of nurses. We are really impressed by these figures. On top of providing high levels of care, this place also excelled in the quality measures we assessed. By way of illustration, it performed as well as any nursing home in the nation in terms of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers. We view these metrics as good indicators of the caliber of nursing care provided.
Short-term Care Quality
This exemplary nursing home also performed well in the area of short-term care, where it received a score of A+. Very few facilities fared better in this area. Our short-term care ratings are arguably more critical for folks in need of rehabilitation services. Rehabilitation generally utilizes additional highly-skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means not just nursing, but also physical and speech therapy, as well as other types of therapy. This facility excelled in two key staffing areas we assessed. It provided about 50% more care from physical therapists and registered nurses than the typical facility. This is certainly an encouraging sign. The final datapoint we assessed in this area is the percentage of residents that ultimately returned home from the facility. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in California in this area with 59.3 percent of its residents returning home. With most facilities, fewer than half of their short-term residents are able to return home.
Facility Inspections
Racking up another strong category grade, this facility also excelled in the area of inspections, where it earned an A-. Perhaps the most important factor we look at in determining our inspection scores is deficiencies. Deficiencies are found on a facility's inspection reports. Nursing homes with better grades in this area typically dodged the most severe deficiencies involving things like patient abuse. Although this nursing home had a few deficiencies on its report, none were severe based on CMS' scale. A few minor deficiencies aren't the end of the world.
Long-term Care Quality
The final category we rated was this nursing home's weakest area. However, even in its weakest link we still gave it a respectable grade of B- in our long-term care category. In a long-term care setting, the nursing home's primary goal is to maintain patients' quality of life and keep them safe. On top of looking at the impressive volume of care provided by nurses and other staff at this facility, we also were happy with the nursing home's vaccination statistics. For example, this facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 94.5946 percent of its patients, which is very respectable. This combination proved to be successful as this place was able to keep its residents out of the hospital. In fact, it had only 0.81 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
