Facility Inspections
To go along with its decent overall grade, we gave this nursing home an A+ for our inspections rating. This is far more impressive than the facility's overall score. Inspection grades weigh several factors, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can learn more about each of these factors by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility also fared well in the area of long-term care. Indeed, we awarded it a score of A- in that category, which is one of our most impressive scores. Facilities that receive this kind of score in long-term care tend to provide consistent around the clock care to ensure patients are well cared for. After we finished assessing the volume of care provided by nurses, we then looked at the facility's vaccination data. This facility vaccinated 98.14815 percent of its patients against pneumonia, which is very impressive. Pneumonia can be a deadly ailment for nursing home residents so we prefer when a nursing home doesn't leave its residents vulnerable. This facility also keeps its patients out of the hospital. It had just 1.06 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a substantially better hospitalization rate than the average nursing home.
Nurse Quality
Moving on to another strength for this facility, it also received an elite nursing rating. We gave this facility a score of D. The nursing category weighs several datapoints, many of which are associated with quantities of nurse staffing. We do not think quantity of care is the reason for this nursing home's poor nursing grade. With 3.9 hours of nursing care per patient per day, this nursing home actually surpassed the national average. Despite being above average in terms of nursing hours, this nursing home had a few less favorable scores in some of the quality-based measures we looked at in determining our nursing grades. We looked at the percent of residents having falls leading to major injury and found this nursing home to be above the national average in this statistic. This is not what we like to see here. We believe that many falls could likely be avoided with better nursing care. This statistic contributed to this place receiving a poor nursing grade.
Short-term Care Quality
Turning to the final category, this nursing home really did not perform well. With a rock bottom grade of F in short-term care, this is its poorest category grade. With our short-term care assessment, we strive to create a sound gauge for rehabilitation. In this process, we assess the facility's level of highly-skilled nursing services, including both registered nurses and physical therapy, as well as speech therapy. Unfortunately, we found that this place offers less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most nursing homes. Lastly, we looked at the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. This definitely was not a strength for this facility. We found that just 34 percent of this nursing home's residents returned home. At most nursing homes, about half of their residents are able to return home so this is well below average.
