This facility excelled in the category of short-term care, with an A- in this area. Short-term care scores are important for prospective residents in need of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation generally utilizes higher levels of highly-skilled nursing services. Skilled nursing means a wide scope of nursing services, spanning from registered nurses to physical and speech therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. This nursing home is above the national average both in terms of its quantity of physical therapy and registered nurse hours provided to its residents. These are generally good indicators of quality short-term care. Lastly, we looked at the number of patients that ultimately returned home from this nursing home. On top of excelling in the area of physical therapy hours, we found that it performed as well as just about any facility in the nation in this area with 65.9 percent of its patients returning home. Most facilities are below 50 percent in this statistic.

This nursing home also performed well in inspections. As a result, it received one of our highest grades in that category with an A-. Our inspection grades account for a host of factors found on a nursing home's inspection reports. One of the most important criteria we consider is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Nursing homes with higher grades in this category tend to have few of these severe deficiencies. While this place had a few deficiencies on its report, none were severe based on CMS' scale. A couple minor deficiencies should not lead you to cross a nursing home off your list.

The next highest grade we gave this nursing home in any area came in the category of nursing, where we gave it a grade of B-. The nursing score weighs numerous subcategories. The most heavily weighted variable is the amount of time nurses spent with residents. This place provided 4.8 hours of nursing care per resident daily. This is an impressive figure. Finally, our nursing rating also includes some applicable quality measures. Even though this place excelled in terms of quantity of nursing hours, it fell short in certain subcategories that focused on quality. This place's nursing score was hurt by poor data related to minimizing pressure ulcers. In fact, we found that 41.9 percent of this facility's residents sustained pressure ulcers. Since many pressure ulcers could be avoided with good nursing protocols, we reduce a facility's nursing score when we find this kind of prevalence.

Long-term Care Quality

The next category we assessed was long-term care. We gave it an F for this area, which is a poor grade. This is certainly a major concern. In a long-term care environment, the facility's primary goal is to keep patients as healthy and safe as possible. This is different than skilled nursing or short-term care where the goal is to rehabilitate patients. In addition to assessing the amount of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. Fortunately, this facility vaccinated 98.305084 percent of its residents, which is an above average statistic. Surprisingly, this nursing home was able to limit hospitalizations. Although it had 7.69 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, its risk adjusted metric wasn't bad since it had more complicated patients.
