Facility Inspections
One of the many reasons this turned out to be a quality nursing home is that it received an A+ inspection grade. This is simply as good as it gets in this critical category. Inspection scores take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies, substantiated complaints and federal fines. You can learn more about each of these factors by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. Amazingly, this was one of the few nursing homes in the country that had no deficiencies whatsoever on its inspection report. This is very impressive. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility received impressive scores in the area of long-term care as well. In fact, we gave it one of our most favorable grades in that area with a area of A-. When nursing homes receive this kind of grade in this category it is typically a good sign for resident care and indicates that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses and aids. One of the factors we considered in addition to nursing hours was vaccines. This facility provided the pneumonia vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccination is a reliable method to minimize unnecessary hospitalizations for the elderly population. Finally, this place was able to limit hospitalizations. It had only 0.01 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Nurse Quality
This facility received a very good nursing grade this year as well. It received one of our better scores in that category with a grade of B+. The nursing rating includes a handful of datapoints, many of which are based on quantities of nurse staffing. This nursing home provides 0.4 hours of nursing care per resident per day. Finally, we also assessed some nursing quality-based metrics in determining our nursing grades. This facility performed very well in terms of minimizing its residents' pressure ulcers and major falls. We consider these areas to be good indicators of the quality of nursing care.
Short-term Care Quality
The last category we looked at is short-term care, where this facility was awarded a B-. While this wound up being its weakest category grade, this is nevertheless not a terrible score. Short-term care grades are vital for residents seeking rehabilitation. Rehabilitation usually requires higher levels of highly-skilled nursing. This means a vast scope of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, as well as other variations of therapy. Fortunately, it looks like this facility employs registered nurses. Not all facilities employs these skilled professionals. On the other hand, based on the data this nursing home provided, it does not look like the facility employs physical therapists. Lastly, we considered the percentage of patients who were able to return to the community from this facility. We found that 4.9 percent of this facility's patients returned home. At most nursing homes, closer to half of their residents are able to return home so this figure is below average.
