Short-term Care Quality
One of the many reasons this turned out to be a great nursing home is that it received a strong short-term care grade. In that area, we awarded this facility an A. Our short-term care grades are thought to be most critical for folks requiring rehabilitation from their nursing home. Rehabilitation typically requires more skilled nursing. Skilled nursing means not merely nursing services, but also physical and respiratory therapy, as well as other variations of therapy. This nursing home provided more physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than most facilities. This is what we like to find when assessing a nursing home in this category. The final item we assessed in this category is the number of residents who ultimately returned home from the facility. We found that it fared as well as just about any nursing home in North Carolina in this area with 63.7 percent of its patients returning home. At most nursing homes, fewer than half of their short-stay residents are able to return home.
Facility Inspections
Adding to this nursing home's impressive resume, we awarded this facility an A for our inspections rating. Our inspection scores weigh several factors found on a facility's inspection report. One of the most important criteria we weigh heavily is the quantity and severity of deficiencies. Facilities with higher scores in this area tend to have few severe deficiencies. While this facility had a few minor dings on its inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are labeled as categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This means that the inspectors didn't consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient safety or health. We should point out that deficiency-free inspection reports are rare in this industry.
Nurse Quality
This facility also excelled in the area of nursing, where it received a grade of A-. Few nursing homes performed better in this area. Our nursing grade consists of quite a few factors, but the main consideration is the level of nurse hours spent with patients. This facility offers 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day, of which more than one hour was provided by registered nurses. This is one of the most highly skilled nurses. In determining our nursing ratings, we add more significance to hours provided by registered nurses. Finally, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. This place performed well in this area. Avoiding major falls is typically a good indicator that a nursing home has reliable quality controls in place. Major falls can generally be prevented if more nurses aids and better safety protocols are in place.
Long-term Care Quality
The last category we analyzed is long-term care. We awarded this nursing home an acceptable grade in this category, with a C. Although this isn't as dominant as a few of this nursing home's other grades, it is nevertheless nothing to be ashamed of. If you are looking for services other than rehabilitation, you should take a close look at long-term care grades. After looking at the amount of care provided by nurses and other staff, we then looked at the facility's vaccination record. We were pleased to find that this nursing home vaccinated 99.62963 percent of its residents against pneumonia. Lastly, this facility was also able to limit hospitalizations. In fact, it had less than one hospitalization per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an impressively low figure.
