To go along with its strong overall grade, we awarded this nursing home a grade of A+ for our inspections rating. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing these inspection grades. One critical factor is health deficiencies. It should be noted that the severity of deficiencies is usually more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some end up being relatively minor. While this nursing home had a few minor dings on its government inspection report, it had no severe deficiencies. Severe deficiencies are found in categories G, H, I, J, K and L. This tells you that the inspectors did not consider any of the deficiencies on this facility's report to pose an imminent threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.

Another one of this facility's quality category scores came in the category of short-term care. We gave them one of our more positive scores in that area, with a grade of B+. Our short-term care grades are based in part on a facility's quantity of skilled nursing services. This includes a broad range of nursing services, ranging from registered nurses to physical and respiratory therapists, not to mention other variations of therapy. This nursing home boosted its score in this category by offering more physical therapy hours to its residents than the average facility. The final datapoint we looked at in this area is the number of residents who were able to leave the nursing home and return to the community. We found that it performed as well as just about any nursing home in Arizona in this area with 56.6 percent of its residents returning home.

Turning to another strength for this facility, we gave them one of our stronger grades in our long-term care category as well, with a B+. Facilities that receive this kind of score in long-term care tend to provide consistent 24/7 care to ensure patients are well cared for. One of the criteria we considered in addition to nursing hours was vaccinations. This facility administered the pneumonia vaccination to 98 percent of its residents. This is a great way to minimize unnecessary hospitalizations for the elderly population. This place was also able to keep its patients out of the hospital. Indeed, it had just 1.1 hospitalizations per 1,000 long-term resident days, which is a significantly better hospitalization rate than the majority of nursing homes.

Historical

The final category we assessed proved to be this nursing home's poorest category. However, even in its worst category we still awarded it a decent grade of C for nursing. In calculating a facility's nursing grade, we assess the amount of time nurses are caring for residents as well as the levels of training of those nurses. This nursing home averages just 3.2 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is a very low figure. Lastly, our nursing grades also factor in quality-based assessments, such as avoiding major falls. While this nursing home didn't have as many nursing hours per resident as many of the other facilities we looked at, it was still better than average in the area of avoiding falls.
