Facility Inspections
In addition to being a first rate nursing home overall, this facility excelled in our inspections category, where it received an A+. Few facilities performed as well in this area. We weigh several aspects of a nursing home's inspection report in computing these inspection scores. One of those factors is health deficiencies. You should keep in mind that the severity of the deficiencies is arguably more meaningful than the quantity of deficiencies, as some of these are quite insignificant. This particular nursing home had just a single deficiency on its inspection report and it was not one deemed to pose a threat to patient health or safety. Finally, this facility had no substantiated complaints this year from residents, which is an excellent sign.
Long-term Care Quality
This facility received strong marks in the category of long-term care as well. Indeed, we awarded it one of our most dominant scores in that area with a score of A-. When facilities receive this type of score in long-term care it is typically a good sign for patient care and indicates that the nursing home is well-staffed with nurses and aids. In addition to looking at the volume of care provided by aids and other staff, we looked at the number of residents vaccinated against pneumonia. This nursing home gave the vaccine to 100 percent of its patients. Vaccines are vital to keeping patients out of the hospital. Finally, this facility was able to limit hospitalizations. Indeed, it had only 0.01 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is a remarkably low number.

Short-term Care Quality
The third area we analyzed was short-term care. In that area, we awarded this nursing home a grade of B-. In computing our short-term care grades, we quantify the facility's skilled nursing services, including those performed by registered nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists and other types of therapists. The goal is to create a measure for sizing up the rehabilitation services of various facilities. We weren't able to find registered nurse or physical therapy staffing data for this facility. The final datapoint we looked at in this category is the number of patients who were able to leave the nursing home and return home. We discovered that just 5.3 percent of this facility's patients were able to return home, which is actually below average.
Nurse Quality
The last area we graded was nursing. This facility was given an above average nursing grade this year, with a C. Even though this isn't nearly as strong as several of its other category grades, this is still a respectable grade for this area. The nursing grade considers a number of data points. The most heavily weighted variable is the quantity of hours nurses spent with patients. This place provides 0.3 hours of nursing care per patient daily. This is a much lower figure than we were hoping for. Despite having low quantities of nursing care, this facility actually excelled in some of the quality-based metrics we assessed. In fact, it scored well in the area of minimizing its residents' major falls and pressure ulcers.
