Facility Inspections
Although we graded this place incredibly poorly overall, it actually received a relatively impressive inspection report this year. As a result, it earned one of our better scores in that category with a B+. Inspection grades take several factors into consideration, including deficiencies and substantiated complaints. You can find more information about each of these items by obtaining copies of nursing homes' inspection reports. This particular nursing home received 8 deficiencies on its inspection report. Overall, this is still a solid inspection report, but we'd always recommend looking into any deficiencies you find troubling.
Nurse Quality
One of the other reasons we rated this nursing home so highly is that it earned a very impressive nursing score. Nursing proved to be its second best category grade. In that area, we awarded this nursing home an D. When determining a nursing home's nursing score, we look at the amount of time nurses spend with patients as well as the level of licensure of those nurses. This facility provided 3.5 hours of nursing care per resident per day. This is below the national average. This nursing home also had terrible scores in some of the quality-based metrics to go along with its low nursing hour totals. We looked at the percentage of patients suffering pressure ulcers and we were disappointed. This facility was at approximately 1.5 times the national average in this statistic. This is likely a bad sign when you consider that many bed sores could be avoided with better nursing care. This statistic helped pull down this facility's nursing grade quite a bit.
Long-term Care Quality
Sadly, this facility's third highest category is long-term care. However, with a grade of D in this area, it still performed somewhat poorly. Long-term care grades in this range generally are a bad sign for the quantity and quality of care provided by nurses and aids, as well as the levels of routine medical care available. Once we assessed the volume of care provided by nurses aids and other staff, we then analyzed the facility's vaccination records. Candidly, we were a bit worried that this facility vaccinated 86.75497 percent of its patients for pneumonia, which happens to be several points lower than average. Unfortunately, its hospitalization rate was also a cause for concern. Here we found that this nursing home had 2.06 hospitalizations per one thousand long-term resident days, which is an alarming rate.
Short-term Care Quality
The next area we rated is short-term care. Unfortunately, we gave it an abysmal F for this category, which is a bottom of the barrel score. Short-term care grades are typically employed to grade a facility's rehabilitation services. In order to have quality rehabilitation services, nursing homes generally must offer higher levels of skilled nursing services. These types of services include registered nurses, physical therapists, respiratory therapists and other types of therapists. Not surprisingly, we found that this nursing home provides far less physical therapist and registered nurse hours per resident than the average facility. The last datapoint we looked at in this area is the percentage of patients that who were able to eventually return home from the facility. This nursing home struggled quite a bit in this metric as well, with just 24.2 percent of its patients returning home. Unfortunately, this was quite a bit below the national average.
